MISSION STATEMENT LifeChoice Donor Services is dedicated to fostering community and professional support of organ and tissue donation, providing compassionate care for families, and saving and improving lives. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Although medical technology has provided us with the ability to transplant vital organs and tissues successfully, we are still faced with an obstacle – the persistent shortage of organs and tissues for transplantation. The staff of LifeChoice Donor Services (LifeChoice) will continue to address this need through the implementation of our procurement program. We also recognize and support the right of the donor and family to have the opportunity to make decisions regarding organ and tissue donation. A major part of our work is to help facilitate this right in cooperation with all affiliated institutions. FEDERAL DESIGNATION LifeChoice is a federally designated, independent, not-for-profit organization which provides organ and tissue donation services to local hospitals located within the following counties: Connecticut – Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New London, Tolland & Windham; Massachusetts – Franklin, Hampden & Hampshire. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (formerly HCFA), under the requirements specified in Section 1138 of the Social Security Act, designates and re-designates an organ procurement organization every four years by defined performance standards. LifeChoice serves a population of approximately 2.1 million people and is a member of the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN) operated by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
